Notes and Editorial Reviews

Romero sounds very comfortable with this repertoire...only terribly exacting listeners would not be entertained by it.

Angel Romero dedicates this CD to his father and mother, but he might have given the honor as easily to Andres Segovia, who could have played and recorded an album much like this one some three decades ago. The music-making is autumnal, tempos are slow, phrases are flexible, extramusical noises are frequent, and the repertoire is sentimental. This CD should come with its own candles. You'll have to supply your own dark room, though.

Romero will get no complaints from me—this still is beautiful playing, although the guitarist's fingers were more agile in the 1980s. (Delos's notes don't tell
Read more us that Romero was born in 1946, and is still a young man, as classical musicians go.) This CD is perfectly suited for quiet times and intimate moments, and it probably is meant to appeal to a wider audience than the usual guitar fanciers.

Most of the arrangements are Romero's own. The exceptions are La Paloma (Tarrega), La füle aux cheveux de lin (Parodi), "Von fremden Ländern und Menschen" (Almeida), and A Prayer (Yocoh); Ernesto Cordero's Pregunta is an original work. For whatever reason, Parodi changes some of the harmonies in the Debussy, and Romero must make compromises to fit the slow movements of Beethoven's "Moonlight" and "Pathétique" Sonatas to his instrument. I wouldn't say that the arrangements are consistently faithful to the artistic intentions of composers, but there's nothing here that just doesn't work on the guitar.

In 1987, Romero recorded A Touch of Class for Telarc (CD-80134). Although there are no duplications between the present CD and the Telarc title, both present Romero in guitar transcriptions of popular classics, and with fine audiophile sound. Romero sounds very comfortable with this repertoire, and no doubt the record labels (and he has worked with several of them) rightly believe it shows the guitarist in a good light. This CD, then, like its Telarc counterpart, hardly pushes the envelope of the guitar discography. Only terribly exacting listeners would not be entertained by it, however.
