This album was recorded to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of Herbert von Karajan in July of 1989.
For more than fifty years, Herbert von Karajan was one of the best-known and most influential musicians in the classical music world. As the director of the Berlin Philharmonic for over thirty years, he molded the orchestra into his own instrument, one which produced some of the most beautiful sounds to be heard on concert platforms.

DG's engineers deserve special mention for capturing the ways in which the cavernous Cathedral gives the sound great resonance and reverberation without muddying the choral and instrumental textures. The Requiem is a performance to treasure, and Rachel Harnish's "Betracht dies Herz" and "Laudate dominum" make this disc all the more essential. Read less
