BACH Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001–1006 Christian Tetzlaff (vn) VIRGIN 22034 (2 CDs: 128:37)

Christian Tetzlaff recorded Bach’s sonatas and partitas in March and November 1993. When it appeared on Virgin in 1994 as 45089, I hailed Tetzlaff as “an anointed reader of Holy Writ” (the assumption being that Bach’s works for solo violin constitute a sort of violinistic Bible). Taking Milstein as a more individual interpreter (at least in his later set from the 1970s) Read more and Grumiaux as a more general one, Tetzlaff seemed then to fall—and still does—nearer to Milstein, though I didn’t think Tetzlaff has quite matched Milstein in personality or Grumiaux in geometry.

The reissue of this intellectually vigorous set offers an opportunity to reconsider that now almost 15-year-old evaluation. First, I’d want to add that while Tetzlaff takes enough time for nuanced playing of dances (like the Corrente from the B-Minor Partita) to make squirmy listeners uneasy, he plays movements like the same Corrente’s double with breathtaking speed and agility (in fact, the rushing 16ths provide an unexpected reminder of the origins of these works in German polyphonic writing, with its relieving flourishes of rapid notes) and movements like the Presto of the First Sonata with kaleidoscopic rhythmic subtlety. The penchant for nuance in the Second Partita’s Allemanda recalls Milstein; and Tetzlaff eschews the mannered punctuation in which some violinists indulge when Bach gives them the opportunity (punctuation they’d never employ in works by another composer). Tetzlaff is especially impressive in the fugues, introducing into the one from the First Sonata a rivulet of flashing arpeggios that propel it forward, and marching through the one in the Second Sonata with the élan of a cavalry charge. The great Fugue in C Major, after Tetzlaff’s somewhat slogging trudge through the Sonata’s opening Adagio, shares the nobility of the others (I used to consider Milstein’s majestic reading of this Fugue the high point of his second set); Tetzlaff marks his progress through this extended movement with unobtrusive shifts in tempo. Of course, the Chaconne stands almost in a class by itself by virtue of its length and complexity; in it, Tetzlaff seems to engage in more pronounced pauses to demarcate phrases, though he keeps the tempo fairly steady and his arpeggiated variations build with steely logic—an apt metaphor for his exposition of the Chaconne as a whole.

Tetzlaff hastens through the Preludio to the Third Partita—like the Chaconne, a popular stand-alone movement—at a rapid tempo that threatens to jumble the intricate patterns of steady 16th notes; Tetzlaff escapes this danger, but only barely. But there can be no denying the brilliance of his passagework, and the entire Partita abounds in it—his playing of the later dances at similarly breathless tempos brings the work, and the cycle, to a close in a blaze of fireworks.

Virgin’s recorded sound presents Tetzlaff at a respectful distance in a reverberant setting (St. George’s, Brandon Hill, Bristol) that endows his tone with great warmth and allows his double-stops and chords to ring out. When all’s told, Tetzlaff’s set, welcome in reissue, still deserves a strong recommendation.
