Notes and Editorial Reviews

Matthias Goerne in his element - and the rewards are uncommonly rich
For all the darkness, there is a gorgeous mellifluousness to Matthias Goerne’s singing that leavens somewhat a very serious-minded collection of rather tragic songs. Yet he does do pain and spiritual anguish supremely well, and doubtless future instalments of this pianist-hopping Schubert edition will focus on different aspects of the song-master’s art. On this evidence, it should be a collection worth investing in.
