Notes & Reviews Back to Top
Three renowned interpreters of Mendelssohn's music are featured on this recording, in some of the composer's most enduring works. Irish-born conductor Sir Hamilton Harty guides the Hallé Orchestra through an outstanding recording, made in the 1930s in Westminster's Central Hall, of Mendelssohn's Fourth Symphony (otherwise known as the 'Italian'); pianist Ania Dorfmann and the London Symphony Orchestra under Walter Goehr provide an exemplary reading of the First Piano Concerto; and the Fifth Symphony ('Reformation') is heard in the 1947 recording made by conductor Charles Münch and the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra.
