Notes and Editorial Reviews

For this volume of the epic Hyperion Schubert Edition, project mastermind and accompanist extraordinaire Graham Johnson has assembled a sort of unofficial Schubertiade. This mixed program consists of material produced after the "miracle" song years of 1815 and 1816 but before the emotional sea change of the years after 1822 when Schubert contracted his fatal illness. The recital is anchored by a number of songs for low voice, 'Der Alpenjager,' 'Atys,' ''Das Abendrot,' 'Prometheus,' 'Die gefangenen Sanger,' 'Grenzen der Menschheit,' and 'Wandrers Nachtlied,' all given excellent performances by the gathered baritones, Thomas Hampson, Matthias Goerne, Simon Keenlyside, and Christopher Maltman, and the bass Neil Davies. Also included are some Read more lighter pieces intended for parties and less formal get-togethers, performed by the London Schubert Chorale and a group of soloists. As is often the case with Schubert, the juxtaposition of high and low art works well. Johnson's pace and judgement are unerring and his documentation, as throughout this magnificent series, is awesome. Read less
