Superb Selections Presented by a World Class Maes May 29, 2014 By Richard F. Buckley (Jefferson Hills, PA) See All My Reviews "This CD features a musical trip around the world from the time of Bach right up to the present. The selections are superbly entertaining and, every corner of the globe is represented. The musicians are world class, and the maestro, Mariss Jansons, is without a doubt one of the world's leading conductors. I have enjoyed his artistry for many years. I was fortunate enough to have relocated to Pittsburgh before he became the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 2004, and I was privileged to enjoy his artistry in person many times. He raised what was an outstanding ensemble to one of the world's best during his leadership. He has done the same with the Oslo Philharmonic. I can't say enough about the quality of the selections offered here, or the skill and artistry with which they are presented. Each brief encore is masterfully portrayed, and the result is exciting and very entertaining. The music includes several old favorite chestnuts, as well as some selections which, I suggest, you probably have never heard before. However, after a few listens, you may come away humming them all and admiring them as much as I do. The selections include a wide variety of featured instruments, some very familiar and some very unfamiliar, such as the cimbalom and the bouzouki. There are two tracks of modern classical Japanese music written by Yuzo Toyama, a composer with whom I was totally unfamiliar. His work is very entertaining. I could say that about every one of the 20 tracks. If the quality of the musicians, selections and sound weren't enough, the disc includes a total of 79:04 minutes of fantastically enjoyable music. I promise that you will be delighted with this outstanding disc. It is long since out of print and not easily found, but if you are fortunate enough to see it offered, pounce on it and buy it ASAP. You will never regret it." Report Abuse
