Notes and Editorial Reviews

Dutoit leads the full-orchestra version of the Requiem but holds the large forces back, giving the account ideal weight and balance. Appropriately French voicings are used on the organ, and women rather than boys in the chorus. Milnes is a bit wide of vibrato, but sings with a suitably noble, consoling tone. Offering her best imitation of a dowdy English mezzo, Te Kanawa sounds covered and fruity, but hers is still a lovely voice. The chorus, less plush than Shaw’s forces, sings very expressively. As usual, the recording, made in October 1987, is a quality product – the presence and atmosphere of the cathedral of St. Eustache are taken full advantage of, and the coupling is the best available.
