Notes and Editorial Reviews

5 PIEZAS INFANTILES, ZARABANDA LEJANA
The Cinco piezas infantiles (1924) were written while he was a student of Dukas, as was the Zarabanda lejana (1926), his first work for the guitar, which he rearranged for the piano in the same year and, with the addition of the Villancico, set for orchestra in 1927-30. In their unaffected simplicity these works remain amongst his best and most evocative. They are both retrospective, looking back to the past – perhaps Rodrigo’s own childhood and, less exuberantly, the 16th century, the time of the vihuelista Luis Milán, named in the subtitle of the Zarabanda...Both performances and recording are first-class.

CONCIERTO IN MODO GALANTE,
Read more CANCONETA, CONCIERTO DE ESTIO
"These pieces sparkle with activity yet yield to longing - as in the Adagietto of the Galante. The motoric chatter of the solo violin in the outer movements contrasts with the poetic side represented by the hushed Siciliana in the Estio - a summer concerto indeed. The raw braying and yelping of the brass proclaim a Northern energy in the finale - this is no longer a summer of siestas! The violin flickers and flames. The Canconeta is half Havanaise and half love song. This is music of utmost tenderness. It is played with a sense of wonder."

JUGLARES
"Juglares, composed in 1923, was Rodrigo’s first orchestral work. After a brief drum tattoo, there is an attractive Allegro with an appealingly monotonous melody, a passionate slower section, and then a return to the opening section—short and sweet..."
"Do you like the Concierto de Aranjuez? (Who doesn’t?) Naxos and I ask you, each in our own way, to explore more of Rodrigo’s music. He was most definitely not a “one work” composer!"
-- Raymond Tuttle, Fanfare
