Notes and Editorial Reviews

Galina Gorchakova and Larissa Gergieva respond with expressive fluency to these poignant songs.

"Memories of Love", not songs of present love; that is to say, the mood of this collection is almost entirely sorrowful, wistful, rueful, poignant, or otherwise looking back on happiness glimpsed or held, and now in the past. A rare exception is Glinka's "Bolero", in which (though it is really a man's song) Gorchakova delivers herself of a splendid stream of threats about what will happen if love is betrayed: passion will be followed by crime passionel. Here, her expansive operatic manner does the trick; it can become a little overblown in other songs where her concern to draw emotional sustenance from

Such is Balakirev's "The bright moon", a pleasant little piece much under the influence of Glinka's own simpler songs. She seems more at home with Glinka himself in this vein, as in his much-loved "The lark", and she and Larissa Gergieva respond with expressive fluency to "Soon you will forget me". Gergieva deserves better than the tiny print for her name tucked under Gorchakova's banner headline on the booklet, especially when it comes to Rachmaninov and "Lilacs". However, the booklet does include full Russian texts and translations into English, French and German.

The Tchaikovsky selection is excellently done, and it is pleasant to encounter the handful of songs by Dargomizhsky, too little known to us as a song writer. There is both skill and charm in "Sixteen years", about a girl too innocent to know how to respond to a young man who turns up in her village one day, follows her, declares himself, then goes his way: "will he come back soon?".
