Notes and Editorial Reviews

Bed?ich Smetana was the first major nationalist composer of Bohemia. Probably best known for his opera The bartered bride and of course The Moldau (from ‘My fatherland’) most of his orchestral music is rather neglected by the average symphony orchestra.

Smetana’s predilection for anything Bohemian shines through not just in his music but also particularly in the subjects of his symphonic poems and opera. A keen dancer himself, his music often echoes his native dance tunes as well.

The composer also had a keen interest in the theatre. Hence the subjects of his early symphonic poems which were based on works by Shakespeare, Schiller and Oehlenschläger.

Essential Czech Works October 11, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "The tragedy of Bedrich Smetana's life and career is completely belied by the consistent beauty of his works. Brilliant Classics offers a 3 disk set which makes this abundantly clear. Under Theodore Kuchar's direction, the excellent Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra surveys Smetana's orchestral works, ranging from his well-known Ma Vlast and Bartered Bride excerpts to a series of short overtures and marches, all played with the pure brilliance and panache which distinguish so much of Czech national music and authentic Czech orchestras. I cannot imagine a finer collection of Smetana's compositions, and I give my highest recommendation to this Brilliant Classics release, especially considering its modest price. Fans of Czech music who already have Smetana in their collection will love this set as a golden addition, and for anyone who doesn't yet know Smetana, what a treasure Brilliant Classics has in store for you. Don't hesitate!!" Report Abuse
Smetana at its Brilliant Best May 20, 2014 By Robert Heinz (San Antonio, TX) See All My Reviews "I discovered this 3 CD set and quickly purchased it primarily for a modern release of the neglected Festive Symphony and Festive Overture in D. I found not only a great Festive symphony but 3 CD's of first rate recordings of Bedrich Smetana's works. Ma Vlast on CD 1 stands up well with the best recordings of this work. Sound is crystal clear on all tracks. Classics Today gave it a 9/8 scoring and I say it easily meets if not exceeds this review." Report Abuse
The best Smetana set May 2, 2013 By Wendell Jones (Midland, TX) See All My Reviews "The American Record Guide calls this the best set of Smetana available. I agree completely. Kuchar has the orchestra responding like they are playing for Szell or Kleiber. I can only agree with the reviewer who said he would like to hear Kuchar with a major orchestra. He is a talent."
