For the most part, Giovanni de Chiaro’s program of guitar transcriptions is quite successful, especially when he’s able to use his fine phrasing and beautiful tone to highlight the many song-like melodies. True, the guitar can’t erase the memory of the silken violin in the famous transcription of Debussy’s The Girl with the Flaxen Hair . Likewise, it can’t really recreate the graceful lilt of an orchestra in the Dance of the Hours or the excitement the same forces can generate in the “Can-Can,” not to mention virtuoso piano performances of the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. In that famous warhorse the guitar version falls short of the infectious zest and cumulative excitement Liszt must have summoned, vigorous strumming and tremolos notwithstanding. Still, the slow introduction is evocative in this new format. Although I’ve always imagined that Liszt was stimulated to write his Hungarian Rhapsodies by hearing Gypsy violinists, whose hair-raising virtuosity no doubt dominated their native ensembles in the past as they do today, it requires only a small stretch of imagination to picture a lone guitarist serenading a campfire audience with the Second Rhapsody’s passionate introductory theme. So while I can’t count the transcription a complete triumph, it has its moments. Elsewhere, the guitar emphasizes the Spanish leanings of Fauré’s Pavane and gently mirrors the quiet dignity of Satie’s Gymnopedies . I also enjoy the tender feeling de Chiaro lavishes on the lovely Welsh carol All Through the Night , with its lingering strophic refrain. Perhaps Melodie d’Amore is most likely to appeal to guitarists and guitar fanciers, but open-minded listeners should also enjoy these alternative versions of familiar works.
