Excellent Small-Orchestra Haydn  May 15, 2012 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "This disk contains 2 symphonies numbered before the more famous "Paris" symphonies, along with Number 99 from Haydn's "London" series. Numbers 80 and 81 contain many clever and interesting passages, making them as enjoyable as the Paris works in fine performances like these. The wind playing of the Cologn Chamber Orchestra is particularly fine, under Mueller-Bruell's direction. The Naxos sound is very clear, but the bass is not as prominent as in some big symphony Haydn recordings. This is more noticeable in Number 99, which must compete with many great orchestra performances. I would describe this perfofomance of 99 as very good bet a bit delicate. The sound on this disk is easier to listen to than that on the famous Dorati series, but I prefer Tate with the English Chamber Orch. on 99. On 80 and 81 this is the finest available! " Report Abuse
