Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's not too late to add another Christmas recording to your list of must-haves for this year. Is it? When you hear this well-chosen and refreshing collection of new and familiar carol arrangements "from Novello's volume of 47 carols and anthems", you'll understand why this disc will fit nicely even into the most comprehensive collection. There's Barry Rose's lushly harmonized Silent Night, Peter Warlock's gorgeous and inexplicably slighted Balulalow, Ralph Allwood's spiffy Jingle Bells, Richard Lloyd's respectable alternative to David Willcocks' arrangement of the plainchant hymn Of the Father's love begotten, a beautiful Still, still, still by Andrew Gant, and several distinctive David Hill arrangements (O come, all ye faithful; Read more Away in a manger; God rest you merry, gentlemen; Rocking; Hark! the herald angels sing). Among the more recently composed original works, Peter Skellern's (African-influenced?) So said the angel is a rhythmically catchy evocation of the angel's "tidings of comfort and joy", Paul Edwards' No small wonder is a compelling, rich-textured expression of God's overwhelming power, and Robert Walker's setting of In the bleak mid-winter shows how this ever-popular Christina Rossetti text continues to lend itself to inspired musical expression. The already stellar program is made even brighter by the presence of Morten Lauridsen's certain-to-become-a-classic setting of O magnum mysterium--although for an even better performance, try Trinity Church, Boston's version (Dorian).

Overall, the performances here are outstanding--it's hard to beat London's Bach Choir (now led by Winchester Cathedral director David Hill), John Wallace's acclaimed brass and percussion ensemble The Wallace Collection, organist Jane Watts, or the Winchester Cathedral Choristers, especially in this repertoire. And the recording, from the popular All Saints, Tooting church venue, really delivers the full impact of choir, organ, and brass, from the a cappella settings to full-ensemble treatments. My only complaint concerns the Winchester Choristers' sound--more glaring and forward than I've heard on past recordings. This is obviously something that director Hill desires--and listeners will either appreciate its admittedly powerful effect or will happily place it in the context of the greater program, which offers enough rewards to recommend the recording with or without the choristers' contribution. Unfortunately, the liner notes include only texts and information on the performers--no information on composers or on the origins or details concerning the carols, original pieces, or arrangements.
