HUMPERDINCK Complete Lieder for Voice and Piano Sibylla Rubens (sop); Christine Müller (mez); Andreas Weller (ten); Thomas Bauer (bar); Uta Hielscher (pn); Chia Chou (pn) OEHMS 807 (2 CDs: 141:09 Text and Translation)

After hearing so many compilations of Lieder by so many famous (or otherwise) well-intentioned singers on a variety of labels large and small, falling into Humperdinck’s lyrical, almost folk-like sound world, and being caught in one’s fall by a group of singers Read more not only dedicated to their work but possessing some of the loveliest voices it has been my pleasure to hear in many a long year, is akin to escaping the Concert Hall from Hell only to trip into the Land of Oz and find oneself, miraculously, cushioned by the field of poppies.

Your reaction to the composer’s Lieder may certainly not be as favorable as my own. There is seldom a tonal clash or real dissonance, in most of this music, despite its being composed in the early 20th century when such things were in the air. Angst was not part of Humperdinck’s musical lexicon, either. These are not songs of pain or isolation, lost love, or even (for the most part) great poetry. They are songs of life and love and enjoyment. You will not find in them the harmonic or melodic subtleties, the shadows of darkness that pass across Strauss’s Lieder, let alone the blacker isolation of Wolf. Rather, they resemble a better-composed, more refined version of the other Strauss, Johann, Jr. Even when the harmonies are more interesting, the mood seldom ventures beyond the reflective.

But they are well written. Make no mistake about that. There is not a really bad piece in the entire set, which encompasses 72 songs written over a period of about 32 years. A few of the earlier songs do use a few harmonic whiffs of Wagner, but that grandiose opera Meister is scarcely present in most of them. These are, for the most part, gentle ballads, lilting waltzes, uplifting march tunes. (Ironically, one of the most harmonically adventurous songs is one called simply “Katz und Maus.” Take a guess what that one’s about.) And Humperdinck was careful not to let a single song outwear its musical welcome. An astonishing 35 songs are a minute-and-a-half long or shorter. Several of these are under a minute. One of the most interesting is the last song of his 1898 group, Liederzyrkus, entitled “Maiahnung” (Melodram). This is one of the very earliest examples of Sprechstimme, but it bears a much closer resemblance to those Richard Tauber records on which he speech-sang than it does to Pierrot Lunaire or Erwärtung.

And now, for the singers. Thomas E. Bauer has a very light, very high German baritone, sort of a cross between young Hermann Prey and Heinrich Rehkemper. His attention to text is simply remarkable. Mezzo Christine Müller, a pupil of Elisabeth Glauser, has a fine voice, light in timbre yet dark in texture. Tenor Andreas Weller, who unfortunately is only assigned 13 songs, is simply outstanding. His clear, high voice rings out on top like that of one of his teachers, Christoph Prégardien, but he also has, to my ears, an even better equalized lower range, and his interpretations are of a consistently high quality. But for me, personally, the voice that captivated—the voice that made me decide to keep this set—was that of soprano Sibylla Rubens. If you haven’t already heard her in her recordings of Bach cantatas and Schubert Lieder on Hänssler Classics, you won’t be able to get enough of her. Her voice, though a bit firmer in the lower end, has exactly the same kind of light blue and silver highlights as that of Elisabeth Schumann. No, I’m not kidding. She, like Müller, took master classes with Edith Mathis, yet as good as Mathis was, Rubens is better. I haven’t heard this kind of singing since Reri Grist was in her prime. Both pianists are also excellent, but this is a singer’s show.

I was also delighted by the sonics. In an era when, it seems, classical producers are trying like mad to ape pop record sound, these discs are clean and forward, with both the vocal and piano tones sounding as if the artists were right in your living room. You can’t say enough about this kind of sound: just a good, natural, flat response, allowing the artists to simply perform and enchant you.
