I SAW THREE SHIPS: CHRISTMAS MUSIC FROM GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL Andrew Nethsingha, cond; Gloucester Cathedral Ch AVIE 2122 (76:03 Text and Translation)

If you are in the market for a new choral Christmas CD, you want it to provide one of two things: (1) a program containing all your favorite Christmas songs and carols, or (2) a program that does not consist of all your Read more favorite songs and carols. The problem associated with the first type is that it can very easily morph into background music. The problem associated with the second type is that you may not be able to use it as background music.

That this disc is of the second type is evident from its very first band, a motet, Nesciens mater , by Jean Mouton (c. 1459–1522). Of its remaining 23 bands, roughly half are devoted to popular carols ( Away in a manger, Silent night, O come, all ye faithful , and so forth). The balance of the program taps such unexpected sources as Herbert Howells, Elizabeth Maconchy, John Tavener (not Taverner), William Mathias, and John Joubert. Play this disc and you may just find yourself listening to it.

Actually, there are two other concerns that ought to be resolved before you seal the deal. How well is it done? How does it sound? The answer to the first is, “Very well done,” and to the second, “Just fine.” Your move.
