Notes and Editorial Reviews

FRANCK Symphony in d. RESPIGHI Pines of Rome Yuri Ahronovitch, cond; Vienna S PROFIL 8011 (61:10) Live: Vienna 3/20/1985

A wild-card volatility jazzes the Franck from the beginning, animating the usually stodgy “Muss es sein” maundering with a showmanship that keeps one on the edge of one’s seat. It is a performance of extreme contrasts—phrases and episodes usually lingered over are galvanized, while oddments too often hurried over are given a Read more long-drawn caress. Description suggests a simple-minded reversal of routine practices, but listeners may discover revived interest in a work frequently fobbed off with rule-of-thumb readings. The sensuous appeal of the Respighi, on the other hand, is dispensed with a sovereign hand, neither milked nor hustled but glowingly there . Spacious ambience favors the strings, as brass and woodwinds slip into relative recess—serviceable sound rather than optimum. An unobtrusive audience applauds following both works. Ahronovitch’s reputation as an aural wizard is not undeserved. Recommended.
