Notes and Editorial Reviews

MOZART Violin Sonatas: in G, K 301; in e, K 304; in F, K 376; in B?, K 454 Aaron Berofsky (vn); Thomas Sauer (pn) BLUE GRIFFIN 143 (69:26)

Some years ago, I was discussing violin-playing with a retired violinist from the Boston Symphony. He admired the older players, Heifetz and Elman and others, who Read more he thought had more character and expressiveness in their playing than more modern counterparts. I said my favorite violinist was Arthur Grumiaux. My friend said he was excellent—for a modern violinist. Grumiaux remains my favorite Mozart-player certainly, for his combination of elegance and respect for what I believe to be the composer’s intentions. I might say something similar about the more robust sounding, slightly less elegant, playing by Aaron Berofsky here. There are few extraordinary gestures and no interpretive whimsy in Berofsky’s sturdy, sensuous playing, nor in that of pianist Thomas Sauer. Sauer’s sound is equally large, and generously pedaled. Recorded closely in a way that fits the upfront interpretation, the performances here are touchingly emotional but rarely retiring, as in the second movement of the Sonata in E Minor I am now listening to. I imagine some listeners will revel in that boldness. At times, I find myself wishing for some of Grumiaux’s nuances in a disc that is, nonetheless, certainly a valuable addition to the catalog.
