Listen to this music, and try to decide: Is it French or Spanish? Impressionist or neo-Classical? Pretty entertainment or progressive manifesto? From piece to piece, you’ll find all those qualities. Collectors may well already have the bulk of this program, as it was drawn from Yolanda Kondonassis’s earlier Telarc recital albums, but the sonata, three of the dances, and one of the preludes are newly recorded, and it’s difficult to find so much Salzedo on a
Read more single disc, and so much Salzedo variety in one collection.

The small pieces may be wispy, but they’re full of individuality and do what they need to do in one to three minutes each. Scintillation and the Variations are longer and wider-ranging works, the former exploiting multiple elements of traditional harp technique and the latter exploring about a dozen different stylistic aspects of a stately 18th-century-style theme of Salzedo’s own devising. Kondonassis takes her time getting through the variations, but she highlights the contrasts among them beautifully: the whimsy of the Bourrée, the delicate color effects in “Staccati,” the rapid but quiet fluttering in “Butterfly,” the touch of Fauré tinged with Pierné in the Barcarolle, and so on. Kondonassis’s accuracy, dynamic control, and color palette are particularly impressive here, but they are, too, in the gnarlier Sonata, a work in true dialogue in which Kondonassis and pianist Kathryn Brown play off against each other superbly.

Timbrally, the harp and piano are an odd couple, but thanks to the musicians and to Telarc’s personnel, they work in excellent balance, and throughout this disc the harp is captured with maximum clarity but minimum claustrophobia. This consistency is especially impressive considering that the program was recorded during five different sets of sessions over the course of more than 14 years.

This disc is a fine introduction to the scope of Salzedo’s music; most of it will appeal to those who love the Romantic-Impressionist harp sound, and the sonata offers substantial stylistic and sonic contrast. The disc is also a fine showcase for Kondonassis, a musician of great imagination, technique, and color.
