Notes and Editorial Reviews

"It is in the orchestral and choral singing, and above all in the performance of Jose van Dam as Louise's father, that this recording scores. Rudel had conducted a production at the New York City Opera during the 1970s, also with Sills, and the fine quality of the recorded sound (produced by Christopher Bishop in the Salle Wagram) lets one hear the many beautiful details and motifs that Charpentier uses to depict the city—this opera could equally have been called Paris—and admire all the more Charpentier's originality.
Van Dam's Golaud-like, brooding Father, not such an elderly figure as Musy makes him in the Fournet recording recently reissued on Philips, brings out the very modern dilemma in which Louise finds herself. What
Read more exactly are her father's motives for wanting to keep her a child, and not letting her marry Julien? Andrew Porter's long and fascinating essay in the booklet points out the many converging influences on French verismo, growing out of the late-nineteenth-century obsession with Wagner (several little orchestral puns here about gods and parents)."
