Notes and Editorial Reviews

A disc that demonstrates the finesse and spontaneity, combined with sheer joy in music-making, which established unequivocally the high reputation of Marriner and the ASMF in baroque music.

Let me next welcome to the CD catalogue one of those Decca Serenata Marriner/ASMF reissues from the early 1970s—recordings which originally appeared on the Argo label and which demonstrate the finesse and spontaneity, combined with sheer joy in music-making, which established unequivocally the high reputation of the group in baroque music. This particular CD concentrates on conjectural realizations of concertos by Bach which we know best as works involving one or more harpsichords. As played here they are utterly convincing in their

The delightful oboe d 'amore Concerto in A major is the equivalent of the solo Keyboard Concerto, BWV1055, while the Oboe Concerto in F comes from the Concerto BWV1053. The Triple Violin Concerto in D derives from the Triple Keyboard Concerto, BWV1064, and even more delectable is the comparable arrangement for violin, oboe and flute of the Triple Keyboard Concerto, BWV1063. These two works will particularly please Bach lovers who find three harpsichords something of a jangle! The distinguished soloists include Neil Black, Carmel Kaine and William Bennett. The recording, made in St John's, Smith Square in London, is remarkably fine in its analogue naturalness of sound and balance. Any of the slow movements here will win you over.
