Hyperion's Bantock recordings have been justly celebrated as burnishing (at least somewhat) the image of a very important turn-of-the-century English composer. There is some wonderful stuff here: the Celtic, Hebridean, and Pagan symphonies, The Witch of Atlas, Fifine at the Fair, Sappho, and the overtures to a Greek Tragedy and Pierrot of the Minute. There's also some junk, particularly the early tone poem (and Tchaikovsky rip-off) Thalaba the Destroyer. All of it is wonderfully performed and magnificently recorded, so if you want to take the Bantock plunge in a serious way, this set comprises the obvious choice. Bantock's virtues include his evocative scoring and a generous fund of attractive, mildly exotic melody. His main weakness is a lack of feeling for form, but he conceals this effectively enough in his best works. Either way, no collection of "English Renaissance" composers can afford to neglect him.
