Notes and Editorial Reviews

Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonies demonstrate why he is regarded as one of the supreme masters of the orchestra. The First he began as a teenager but completely revised in 1884, while his Symphony No.2 shows Rimsky the master storyteller, evoking the fantastic Arabian tale of Antar - how the hero in the desert rescues a beautiful princess disguised as a gazelle and is granted three wishes, one movement per wish. The symphonies do not usually have fillers, but here the enterprising couplings include the rarely-heard Fantasia on Serbian Themes, an exuberant piece whose neglect is inexplicable. The whole programme opens with the superb Overture to Rimsky's ninth opera, The Tsar's Bride. The great Philharmonia Orchestra is conducted by Yondani Butt, Read more who has already won an MRA Award for his previous Rimsky-Korsakov symphony recording.
