Sheer and total delight, over two and a half hours of unalloyed pleasure; buy this album immediately. Originally conceived by Opera Rara’s cofounding father Patrick Schmid, the selections, as you can see from the headnote, are far from run-of-the-mill, while interpreters and material have been well matched throughout. Offenbach in all his moods is represented, from simple ballad to patter song to outrageous onomatopoetic noises to vocal showpiece. The inspiration is unflagging, and we are given as closely as possible the composer’s original orchestrations, rather than the souped-up schmaltz found on Joan Sutherland’s French operatic arias reissue that I reviewed recently. It would be nice if some enterprising impresario would consider offering some of these works to the public, with their absurdities galore that today would incite certain directors to utter folly. Laura Claycomb and Elizabeth Vidal are glorious in their stratospheric soaring; Cassandre Berthon is a wonderful French soubrette (Yniold has been one of her major roles); Yvonne Kenny is now sounding a bit worn around the edges, but she knows the style. Jennifer Larmore can be the grande dame but she also can get her tongue around a patter song, while Diana Montague and Alexandra Sherman are no slouches. Loïc Félix sounds a natural here, while Colin Lee’s promotion to romantic tenor has enhanced his self-confidence, though the recording process alas enhances his vibrato. All the Marks (Wilde, le Brocq, and Stone) have their individual moments, while André Cognet’s crisp French is a model that the others do their unflagging best to emulate. Alastair Miles is his usual suave self, but everyone has at least one chance to shine and makes the most of it. David Parry and the London Philharmonic make the most of Offenbach’s sometimes quirky scoring. It is impossible to single out specific items, as every one of the selections is a gem. Listening to the album three times in three days has resulted in ever-mounting enthusiasm.

Must buy February 28, 2013 By M. Drake (South Beach, OR) See All My Reviews "This is without question a fantastic production. Any Offenbach lover should definitely find the dollars for this one. I was a little hesitant over the expense, but it is worth every penny. A complete libretto with excellent translations and a plethora of operaphile info is enough to begin with. Then you have one little jewel after another of quality performances - jewels you don't normally get to hear. Best money I've spent in a long time." Report Abuse
