Notes and Editorial Reviews

Without intending to snub the King's Consort's reading of Schutz's Christmas Story, which is very good indeed, it has to be said that the most special performances on this record come after the main course, in the form of two mighty motets by Giovanni Gabrieli. The 15-voice Salvator noster, a polychromatic riot of massy chords and vocal fireworks, is frankly a revelation; I have never heard Gabrieli performed to such spectacular effect, with layer upon layer of sound streaming through the resonant spaces of the church in seamless, resplendent majesty. Quem vidistis pastores, allocated here to solo men's voices, brass and continuo, is barely less awesome in effect. It matters little that O magnum mysterium receives more perfunctory Read more treatment, and that Audite principes is a weaker composition than its partners. For Salvator noster and Quem vidistis alone this record is well worth having.
