Notes and Editorial Reviews

Though there are better-known recordings of the original solo piano version of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition -- one thinks immediately of Vladimir Horowitz and Sviatoslav Richter -- Michel Béroff's recording has many things to recommend it. Béroff has the technique to take on Mussorgsky's excessively difficult piano writing, and he has the guts to go flat-out in "The Hut on Fowl's Leg" and "The Great Gates of Kiev." He also has the brains to include the rest of Mussorgsky's piano works, and while none of those works are anywhere near in the same league as Pictures, they are generally melodic, energetic, and atmospheric.
