Balanced October 24, 2013 By E. Barnes (Dunn Loring, VA) See All My Reviews "These concertos were recorded from 1967 to 1970. Simon Preston was a still-young 29 - 33 years old. Menuhin, a superb violinist as you know, was just branching into conducting at age 51 - 54. Neither musician was excessively into HIP (historically informed performance, a.k.a original instruments and all that), and of course HIP was in its infancy at the time anyway. So what you get are performances largely free of the clutter of excessive amounts of trills and other foppish mannerisms, and the sound is lush, not lean. And frankly, that's a great way to experience these pieces! There's just enough HIP to make them move along, but not at breakneck speed. The concertos themselves are not cookie-cutter affairs either. Each has its own distinct personality and form. Clearly, I love this set, and what a great price!" Report Abuse
Superlative July 3, 2013 By Anthony G. (valley stream, NY) See All My Reviews "Intoxicating to listen to, they lift the spirits and cheer the heart on every listening. I return to them over and over again for enjoyment and inspiration. You will too. And to have them ALL in one collection! This collection is a paragon. The combination of Preston and Menuhin is ideal. This music and music making will never be surpassed." Report Abuse
