Notes and Editorial Reviews

This was the Paris Opéra's 2005 Christmas offering...It's a big, big show with the full chorus reacting as stage audience plus a horde of extras, dancers and a troupe of jugglers. It says much for the discipline of Deflo's direction that the work isn't swamped. Visually it's French rather than Russian commedia dell'arte, with Charles Workman playing the Prince as Jean-Louis Barrault's Pierroy in Les Enfants du Paradis, and carrying it off confidently as well singing with sweet, unforced tone...it is all good lively fun..."
