Notes and Editorial Reviews
Although Felix Slatkin may not be in the front ranks of conductors of the 20th century, this collection is nonetheless a welcome release: a classic recording from the mono era available on CD for the first time.
'Peer Gynt' contains one of the most memorable melodies of all time in "Morning Mood" (and in Slatkin's hands it is given a lilting and buoyant reading), but it is "Ase's Death" that stands out here: a poignant, breathtaking reading of understated power. Debussy's 'Petite Suite' was originally a four-hand piano work but under Henri Büsser's delicate orchestration, this work from 1889 sounds in part like a joyful, young Mahler, with only a hint of Debussy's later Impressionist style of the 1900s.

Cuckoo in Spring" is a classic work of the English pastoral tradition. In this recording Slatkin evinces a warm, understated performance that is in keeping with this work's calm and meditative character. The 'Caucasion Sketches' by Ippolitov-Ivanov is probably the underrated composer's most famous work. A work of great majesty and splendor, it was inspired by the vast tract of land extending from the Black Sea to the Caspian. This performance soars under the baton of Slatkin. Read less
