What orchestra counts among its former music directors Fritz Reiner, Andre Previn, and Lorin Maazel? OK, so it's the Pittsburgh Symphony, the point being that herein lies a tradition that is a bit richer than many might realize. The exact nature of some of these riches is revealed in this disc of material featuring conductor William Steinberg, which was released on The Capitol Label back in the 1950s. Steinberg is best remembered for his tenure with the Boston Symphony in the 1970s, which resulted in some top-selling LPs, but Pittsburgh had been his post for the previous two decades, his specialty the German classics, Brahms, Bruckner, and, as we have here, Beethoven.
