Notes and Editorial Reviews

The music comprising Mensa sonora is full of delightful ideas which are vividly realized by Goebel and Cologne Musica Antiqua. Altogether a splendid achievement by everyone concerned.

Mensa sonora is a six-part anthology falling in, to a greater or lesser extent, with a mixed pattern of suite and chamber sonata. In his dedicatory preface to Maximilian Gandolph, Archbishop of Salzburg, Biber points out that ''The Sonorous Table, or Instrumental Table Music with the lively sound of the violin [is] by no means painstakingly to spread upon your princely table a rare banquet, like those of the glutton Apicius, nor to serve you with a pearl beyond price, like the spendthrift Cleopatra, but to tender in all dutifulness the
Read more noble jewel of homophony, concordant with obedient and humble veneration''. Biber's description fairly states the case, though just how successfully such original ideas as those contained in Mensa sonora remained in the sphere of background music we may well conjecture.

Biber's scoring is for a small string ensemble of violins, viola and basso continuo and as Reinhard Goebel remarks in his note, there is considerable interest in the inner part-writing. Less influenced by the French style than his contemporary, Georg Muffat, Goebel suggests that Biber was more concerned in writing music to be listened to than danced to. That may be so but the self-evident dance orientation of many of the pieces here, together with their kinetic energy and feeling for gesture, must have encouraged those so inclined to take to the floor. The engaging ''Balletti'' of the charming F major Suite, especially the first of them, cries out to be danced to. The A minor and G minor Suites, on the other hand, consist largely of pieces to be listened to, albeit to the accompaniment of dishes, tankards and much else besides.

The music comprising Mensa sonora is full of delightful ideas which are vividly realized by Goebel and Cologne Musica Antiqua. Goebel's own violin playing is as precise, virtuosic and full of fantasy as ever and it is in repertory of this period rather than that of the late baroque that I find him more consistently satisfying. By way of an entracte between the first three and the last three parts of the anthology, Goebel gives a vivid performance of Biber's Sonata violino solo representativa. This entertaining sonata for violin and continuo depicts a nightingale, cuckoo, cockerel and hen, a quail, frog and a cat which wreaks havoc with all of them, and a musketeer who sends the cat packing. Many of the tricks of the violinist's trade, of which Biber was a poetic master, are on display here and Goebel revels in all of them. Altogether a splendid achievement by everyone concerned.
