Notes and Editorial Reviews

F. GASPARINI Sapessi almen perche. Dimmi gentil Daliso.La lontananza. Chi non sa che sia morire. Trio Sonata for 2 Violins and Continuo Yasunori Imamura (thb), cond; Fons Musicæ MYTO 10189 (78:41 Text and Translation)

Francesco Gasparini (1661–1727), according to the liner notes, is not well known even among Baroque specialists. Apparently, his biggest claim to fame was teaching counterpoint to Johann Quantz. One certainly cannot say that his Read more music is as richly endowed as that of Bach, Buxtehude, Vivaldi, Handel, Fux, or his countryman Carissimi, but I found it a delightful and pleasant evening listening to this CD. I’m sure, though, that the high quality of the performances here had much to do with that. Fons Musicæ, founded in 1997 by lutenist-theorboist Yasunori Imamura, is certainly one of those HIP groups that knows their oats. They understand that this music was meant to be enjoyed, that it requires life and lift, and they perform it in that manner.

Countertenor Pascal Bertin is certainly not a bad singer, his performances being quite stylish and well executed, but I was absolutely captivated by soprano Monique Zanetti. What a simply wonderful artist she is! There is not a phrase, not a note, which she does not sing with color and feeling and a sense of total involvement. Yet Fons Musicæ can captivate even without her very valuable services; the instrumental Sonata that is the centerpiece of this disc is simply enchanting.

One wonders, when listening to such a perfect wedding of music and performer, if the latter isn’t helping along our appreciation of the former. I could, unfortunately, very easily hear this music in my mind’s ear being performed coldly and mechanically by any number of HIP groups now on the early-music scene. In relistening to the disc, in fact, I continued to enjoy the performers and their subtle inflections while noticing the relatively ordinary quality of the music. Be that as it may, if you are a collector of things Baroque, and you wish to have an album of Gasparini’s music in your file, this one is certain not to disappoint.
