Notes and Editorial Reviews

"[Steven Isserlis's] lightness of touch, and crisp, clean bravura add to the overall feeling of refinement, which is matched by John Eliot Gardiner's stylish accompaniment. In Variation No. 5 [of the Rococo Variations] the soloist's reserve brings an elegiac feeling to the melodic line, while Gardiner's woodwind decorations are comparably gentle. Similarly, the very Russian Andante sostenuto (Variation No. 7), is phrased with a slightly understated eloquence, which also suits Glazunov's Melodie from his Two Pieces and the two engaging Cui Morceaux... The recording is admirably truthful and naturally balanced. -- Ivan March, Gramophone [10/1990] "[Steven Isserlis's] lightness of touch, and crisp, clean bravura add to the overall feeling of refinement, which is matched by John Eliot Gardiner's stylish accompaniment.
