Talk About Your Money's Worth! May 19, 2016 By Richard Buckley (Oakmont, PA) See All My Reviews "I bought this set for several reasons, not the least of which was that I had purchased another five disc set in the same series, Ultimate Violin Classics, and I was remarkably pleased with it. The violin set included almost countless selections by outstanding composers - many of which I was previously missing in my large collection of classical music. Also, very surprisingly for the incredibly bargain price, the technical features were really outstanding! The sound left nothing to be desired! Even more importantly, the violin set featured some of my all-time favorite violinists: Henryk Szeryng, David Oistrakh, Arthur Grumiaux, etc. They are easily all members of the Hall of Fame of Violinists, if there were such a thing! This five disc set, Ultimate Cello Classics, is almost as good for many of the same reasons! It, too, is an unbelievable bargain! All of the selections are superb! One would be hard pressed to ask for more in that area! The featured composers include the likes of Saint-Saens, Dvorak, Bach, Faure, Tchaikovsky, etc., etc. Also induced are several outstanding orchestral groups and conductors The list is too long to include here, but I'll name a few conductors, so you will get the idea: Sir Neville Mariner, Yan Pascal Tortellier, Yehudi Menuin, Vaclav Neumann, etc. The technical production, sound, etc., is remarkably hard to believe for any price! The only area with which I find fault with this cello set, and the only reason I give it four stars instead of five, may well be a personal one. I had hoped that this set would have included a few more of my all-time favorite cellists: Jacqueline du Pre, Dimitri Shostakovich and Pablo Casals, for instance. As I say, the reason for only four stars may be my personal taste in cellists. I may be all wrong. I certainly would never put down the talent of Julian Lloyd Weber, who is featured on two of the discs. I also enjoy the offerings of Heinrich Schiff, who, for my money, is so grossly underrated, and others contributing to this set. All in all, despite my shortcomings in taste, I couldn't suggest more vehemently, that you hurry and add this five disc set, as well as the violin set, to your collection of classical hits. You will never be sorry!" Report Abuse
