Notes and Editorial Reviews

KORNGOLD Piano Trio in D, op. 1. Suite, op. 23 1 Tr Parnassus; Matthias Wollong (vn) 1 MDG 303 1463 (68:43)

This recording is a true marvel! MDG deserves all credit for releasing this highly moving disc. The musical purgatory from which Korngold’s music never really seemed to be able to escape from, has always been a tremendous weight on the composer’s Read more reputation. It was clear that after his return from America to his native Austria after the Second World War, Erich Korngold was no longer welcome in post-war Europe.

This new release shows us how truly great his music really is; romantic, sensitive, and intimate. The present recording of his Piano Trio, op. 1, and the Suite, op. 23, for two violins, cello, and piano does the composer’s music great justice. The Trio Parnassus has made several acclaimed recordings for the German label so far, and this one will certainly prove to be one of their best.

The Trio Parnassus consists of violinist Yamei Yu, cellist Michael Gross, and pianist Chia Chou—three musicians that seem to understand each other incredibly well. Their ensemble playing is marvelously exact and secure. Although Michael Gross’s cello sounds a little modest and stiff, together they still create fantastic phrasing and tension as a group. Violinist Yamei Yu’s sound is generously melodic and she leads the trio in a natural and convincing way. Pianist Chia Chou is an intelligent musician with great understanding of the score.

The sound is very similar to all other MDG recordings—it’s focused and crisp, while respecting the natural environment of the hall’s acoustics.

The recording of the Escher Trio on Challenge offers equal flair and originality in the trio, and you may like their extremely lyrical approach to the music of Korngold. One hopes the release of this new recording has set a new standard for the appreciation of Erich Korngold as a noteworthy composer of the 20th century.
