Notes and Editorial Reviews

Here are eight CDs, each one devoted to excerpts from one of Maria Callas' complete recordings made for EMI between 1953 (Tosca) and 1964 (Carmen). The CDs vary from about 53 minutes to a bit more than an hour. They present not only Callas' solos, but choruses (Triumphal Scene), duets for other characters (Pollione, Adalgisa, Marcello, Rodolfo), and arias for other characters (Don José's Flower Song; Edgardo's Tomb Scene; "Che gelida manina"; "E lucevan le stelle"; "Celeste Aida"). True Callas fans already own most of these; others might have wanted more Callas and less of the others. The point is, these are great samplers, offered at a good price in a handy box, with good synopses.

The
Read more Tosca is still the finest recording available; the Carmen, though controversial, remains a stunning experiment for Callas (she never sang it on stage, but lives the role as if she'd been performing it for years); the Butterfly is unique and intriguing; the Traviata epic. The Lucia and Norma are both from 1960 when Callas was in vocal decline, and to be sure there are some sounds that are dreadful--but her insights are unbeatable, her musicianship remarkable, her commitment unmatched. The Boheme is a bit light-weight (she never sang the role on stage), but it's charming and sincere, and the Aida has glorious moments. All of the supporting singers are worth hearing, and the leadership, save for Antonino Votto in Boheme, is top notch. Sound is variable mono and good early stereo. In short, a fine collection for the non-obsessive.
