Outstanding New Recording June 16, 2015 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Here is a 2-CD set that will surely be welcome to chamber music devotees. Austrian composer Carl Czerny, who was a student of Beethoven in the early 19th century, appears to be undergoing something of a modern revival, as I have noticed several Czerny recordings appearing in the past several months. This new Capriccio recording presents four Czerny string quartets, two of which are marked as world premieres. Characterized by strongly assertive themes, complex counterpoint, and a sense of serious, no-nonsense attention to detail, these works show Beethoven's influence and present themselves as compositions of considerable merit. I am sure I am on solid ground by asserting that even the first listening will generate a solid and positive response. This is highly quality chamber music that offers aesthetic and intellectual rewards to the serious listener. Of interest, the ensemble performing Czerny's quartets is not what one could call a full time string quartet. This is the first exposure I have had to the Sheridan Ensemble, which turns out to be an eclectic, flexibly structured cadre of professional musicians from well-known European chamber orchestras. According to the CD booklet notes, the group performs in a broad array of musical genres, thus calling for varying instruments and tailored ensemble sizes, depending on the material it is playing. In any event, the Sheridan Ensemble's performance on these 2 disks is simply outstanding- sharp, focused, with obvious affinity for Czerny's scores. Recorded in 2011/2012 and released by Capriccio in 2015, the Czerny quartets are a superb choice for anyone interested in unknown repertoire. Everything about this Carl Czerny program is impressive, and I have no hesitation in giving it a solid 'thumbs up.' Very much recommended." Report Abuse
