Nimble fingered twosomeMay 19, 2015By Oscar O. Veterano See All My Reviews"Amadeus Guitar Duo Spanish Night NAXOS This recording consists of 3 concertos by Joachin Rodrigo for guitar(s) and orchestra and performed by the Amadeus Guitar duo, Dale Kavanagh and Thomas Kirchoff. The first piece, Rodrigos best-known work Concierto De Aranjues, is skillfully played by Ms. Kavanagh, whose sure handed technique and tasteful sense of dynamics is particularly effective. To take on a composition thats been a concert (and recording) staple for all of the 20th centurys virtuoso guitarists shows an admirable and, in this case, well deserved confidence on her part. The Amadeus Duo enlists the help of long time cohorts Eden-Stell Duo (Mark Eden and Christopher Stell) for Rodrigos Concierto Andaluz, a work originally written for the Romeros. Assisted by the International Philharmonie, a surprisingly mature sounding youth orchestra, the four guitarists achieve a nearly seamless blend, on a par with many groups working as full time quartets. However, the real treat of this project is Concierto Madrigal, a composition heard far less often than Aranjuez or Andaluz. Written as 10 variations of an old Italian madrigal, it has the greatest emotional range of the pieces presented here and showcases the Duos musical interplay to best effect. A must-have for guitar students and fans of 20th century Spanish music, Spanish Night by Amadeus Guitar Duo will remind even the casual listener how entertaining serious music can be.
