Mercury Takes Off Again May 11, 2015 By Jesse  J. (New York, NY) See All My Reviews "I have not completed my listening to all of the CDs in the third Mercury box since I am working on the first two but can say that it keeps up the high standard for sound and most content. The only issue I have is in some CDs, the exact content of the LP is on some CDs. Thus, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Victor Herbert!! only have 12 songs each which makes for a mighty skmpy CD. Otherwise, everything else is great!!" Report Abuse
Another great boxed set from Mercury April 29, 2015 By ROLAND M. (LEOMINSTER, MA) See All My Reviews "This set is a great mix of "serious" classical and "light" classical music. Have not listened to all the discs in this set as of this date, but have done a broad sampling. The performances that I have listened to so far have been very good to outstanding. Love Dorati's Tchaikovsky Fifth and the first three Tchaikovsky symphonies. Listening to these performances makes me wonder why this Russian composer has not been at the top of my favorites list! I am listening on what I would call an "entry level" high end system. The sound quality and the stereo imaging are at least as good as the best recordings being made today. In fact, the sound quality of some of these recordings is of the "knock your socks off" quality. Hard to believe that these go back to the 1950's and early 1960's. Today's recording engineers could learn a lot by listening to these discs. Between this set and Volumes 1 and 2 of these Mercury re-issues, one has a wonderful look into some of the great performances of the past and the performance practices of those times. Also amazing what the recording engineers were able to do with what we now would call "primitive" equipment. All three sets are a great value and will provide years of musical discoveries and delights to the listener." Report Abuse
It really is that good! March 28, 2015 By J. Tatnall (West Grove, PA) See All My Reviews "As I write this I am listening to Hanson and List's recording of Gershwin, having just finished Dorati's Stravinsky ballets. The sound is clear, the instruments jump at you--you can hear woodwind "chif" and brass "brawk" as on few other recordings from the 50s or 60s (and none from the 70s or 80s) The conductors Dorati and Paray, Hanson (composer as well) and Fennell make the Mercury collections top drawer. These collections are worth the investment and will repay in repeated great listening!" Report Abuse
