Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Not just a pretty voice" is the heading given to Karl Schumann's essay on the singer in the accompanying booklet. The fact that it has to be said rather suggests a general supposition to the contrary. But of course there is a great deal more to Rita Streich's singing than the pretty voice. There is finely-schooled technique, an exceptional upward range, an admirable clarity of diction, a mastery of the repertoire. Yet that may not be quite what is meant. The suspicion, which the heading contests, is that this is a fair-weather voice, providing a song and a smile for a sunny day but with little to offer for the winter, the storm, the passions and pains of mankind.

There is something in it. A similar thought arose in
Read more connection with the recent Schubert recital by Barbara Hendricks (8/93). One difference is that Hendricks, including in her programme Die junge Nonne and other songs which tell of suffering hearts, has given herself an opportunity to dispel any such feelings of superficiality. Streich is heard here in a more emotionally restrictive repertoire: the Mozart songs, for instance, do not include Abendempfindung or Als Luise die Briefe which, respectively and without detriment to the delicate voice, would have challenged a more evident profundity of emotional involvement. She is in fact best suited by a light type of song, emotionally as well as vocally, and is at her characteristic best in, say, Mozart's Sehnsucht nach dem Fruhling ("Komm, lieber Mai"), Schubert's Liebhaber in allen Gestalten, Schumann's Schneeglocklein.

Yet personally I found a warmer reaction to this recital than to Hendricks's, one of the causes being the tender, smiling warmth which Streich herself conveys even within so limited an expressive range. Mozart's Das Lied der Trennung, for instance, is tenderly regretful; Schubert's blur wer die Sehnsuchi kenni culminates in a little intake of breath, a restrained anxiety, settling to the sad reprise of the opening lines; Strauss's An die Nachi rises with seriousness to something approaching a full-bodied climax. More than this, affection proves itself in the handling of words and melody (try Strauss's Einerlei). There is more than a pretty voice, though the voice is such a pretty one, as heard here, that this is what you think of most: apart, that is, from the virtuosity, which in Strauss's Amor and Milhaud's Ronsard settings is simply breathtaking.

Both pianists give pleasure, and both could with profit have been allowed a slightly more generous share of the microphone. Two discrepancies occur between the printed programme and the records on disc. On the second disc, the third track is Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt, not Schubert's So lass mich scheinen, and track 17 is the Brahms Madchenlied, Op. 85 No. 3, not his Op. 107 No. 5.
