This superb London cast recording of the musical Robert and Elizabeth, based (in part) on The Barretts of Wimpole Street, features June Bronhill and Keith Michell both in excellent voice, working to a lively score by Ron Grainer with clever lyrics by Ronald Millar. The piece itself is the kind of Victorian romp that Stephen Sondheim later added some extra (and extra-kinky) twists to in Sweeney Todd -- the music here is more traditionally melodic and the lyrics not remotely as daring or clever, but this is an eminently satisfying work, and an equally fine cast recording. Bronhill, in particular, captures the essence of Elizabeth Barrett's character as presented in the play, without going over into Victorian parody -- she's affecting in theRead more role, much as Michell is in his portrayal of Robert Browning. The Norman Newell production is first-rate and sufficiently opulent to reward those who grab this up on CD, with its higher resolution, and the producers have provided thorough annotation in the CD package as well as a good, clean, bright transfer.

One of the greatest from the Golden AgeMarch 25, 2015By Michael C. (San Francisco, CA)See All My Reviews"I agree with Bridget S: this musical fully deserves a revival, though we'd be hard-pressed to find a comparable 'Elizabeth'. I never tire of playing the LP - it will be interesting to see how the CD compares technically."Report Abuse
Robert and Elizabeth / Original London CastMarch 7, 2013By kenneth b. (kennington park place, london)See All My Reviews"Very pleased with this CD. 'Robert and Elizabeth' is based on The Barretts of Wimpole Street. There are many fine musical numbers including the Overture, I Know Now, and the catchy Pass the Eau De Cologne."Report Abuse
Operetta lives!November 24, 2012By Alec R. See All My Reviews"A dear friend of mine who has a fine soprano voice, and with whom I have performed in G & S, operettas and musicals, lent me her recording of this many years ago. It is written in the so-called old-fashioned style! It contains lovely music and is of course the love story of the great English poets, Robert and Elizabeth Browning. I have recently been looking for recordings of June Bronhill, whose Offenbach & Lehar recordings I grew up with. I haven't been able before to find any recording on CD and when I tried Arkiv today I leapt with joy! Keith Michell and June Bronhill are marvellous together. If you love fine music and singing of any theatree genre, you'll love this-unless you don't have a romantic bone in your body!"Report Abuse
