Notes and Editorial Reviews
This superb London cast recording of the musical Robert and Elizabeth, based (in part) on The Barretts of Wimpole Street, features June Bronhill and Keith Michell both in excellent voice, working to a lively score by Ron Grainer with clever lyrics by Ronald Millar. The piece itself is the kind of Victorian romp that Stephen Sondheim later added some extra (and extra-kinky) twists to in Sweeney Todd -- the music here is more traditionally melodic and the lyrics not remotely as daring or clever, but this is an eminently satisfying work, and an equally fine cast recording. Bronhill, in particular, captures the essence of Elizabeth Barrett's character as presented in the play, without going over into Victorian parody -- she's affecting in the
role, much as Michell is in his portrayal of Robert Browning. The Norman Newell production is first-rate and sufficiently opulent to reward those who grab this up on CD, with its higher resolution, and the producers have provided thorough annotation in the CD package as well as a good, clean, bright transfer.

A Great Example of the best of a british musical May 26, 2015
By ian marshall fisher (london, london) See All My Reviews
"Even though the composer is Australian, this could only be a British musical and a good British show, and this being so, this show is very well represented in this recording. (Mr Millar, I believe, was a speech writer for Mrs Thatcher!) The highlight is the performance from June Bronhill, a first rate Australian soprano with a sound of her own moving into the world of the musical, surrounded by a solid cast."
One of the greatest from the Golden Age March 25, 2015

"I agree with Bridget S: this musical fully deserves a revival, though we'd be hard-pressed to find a comparable 'Elizabeth'. I never tire of playing the LP - it will be interesting to see how the CD compares technically."

"Very pleased with this CD. 'Robert and Elizabeth' is based on The Barretts of Wimpole Street. There are many fine musical numbers including the Overture, I Know Now, and the catchy Pass the Eau De Cologne."
