Notes and Editorial Reviews

For years I’ve been referring to this recording as a “reference” for Mahler’s Fourth, and it’s a pleasure to be able to talk about it in greater detail. This is one of those “sleepers” that comes along occasionally, a disc by artists that aren’t normally associated with the repertoire (Ameling aside, of course), but one that’s so splendidly done that it belongs among the select versions. The playing of the Pittsburgh Symphony is just fabulous; the horns in the first movement and scherzo are amazing. Previn conducts a deeply satisfying reading, fresh and spontaneous, with a particularly well-paced and moving Adagio. Elly Ameling was one of the great exponents of the finale, and she sounds perfectly
Read more in tune with the naivety of the text. The sonics were superb for the period (1979). In this particular compilation, the Schubert songs offer an additional dose of Ameling that her many fans will appreciate. In sum, this is a great recording, one that shouldn’t be overlooked because it comes from an unusual source in the Mahlerian universe.
