 Bel Canto Fan January 7, 2012 By Perry S. (New Plymouth, -) See All My Reviews "I would not have purchased this version of The Merry Widow had it not been on Sale, as the converted price would have been high for a gamble. However a gamble has to pay sometimes and this is one of those times.
A very large out door stage and cast with excellent principals make this a version to treasure. It is different, in that Anna has a harder character than usual, but it is a truer version for that.
The Horseman duet is moved from the second act to the first and fits in beautifully. And, because of the stage size, the scene at Maxims is spectacular with many dancers and gymnasts doing their thing.
As with all opera from Vienna, which can be relied on for top productions with top voices, this operetta has great principal singers, and very appropriate older people for the roles of Baron Zeta and Njegus.
All in all a very good buy and a great version to have alongside the San Francisco version I already have, where Yvonne Kenny is not in great voice and I suspect on the verge of retirement." Report Abuse
