Read more welcomed him with enthusiasm. Critics, however, had been rather more hesitant, still upset by the novelty of the composer’s language. Fortunately, Rossini was careful not to study the ancient models and happily left them to “sleep in the dust”: indeed, if there is just one adjective that best matches his music it is “new”. Rossini’s appearance on Italian stages was not a breath of fresh air, it was a real tornado. The “Napoleon of music” as he was aptly called, had come to turn the tranquil plodding ways of old Italy upside down, and it would take some time for the supporters of the good old days to come to terms with this.
