Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's good that Decca reissues this splendid 1965 Vladimir Ashkenazy recital in full (the Chopin and Ravel selections previously appeared in Philips' deleted Great Pianists series). Because the warm, intimate, and detailed sonics register more vividly than ever via Decca's new 24-bit transfers, they possibly reveal the performances in a more positive light than I've previously granted the erstwhile young virtuoso. For example, the trills leading into the recapitulation of the Chopin E major Scherzo's main theme convey more urgency and nuance than in the pianist's two subsequent remakes. And speaking of trills, Ashkenazy's in the B major Nocturne ravish the senses, although I prefer the more flowing trajectory of his lovely 1999 version. Read more />
Despite the firmer overall architecture and wider dynamic range characterizing the pianist's 1985 Ravel Gaspard de la nuit, I can't resist the more playful, impetuously scintillating quality of this earlier version's outer movements. Ashkenazy addresses the sensual, languid undercurrents of Debussy's L'Isle Joyeuse, yet never at the expense of articulation and rhythmic backbone. In fact, the interpretation's power and solidity illuminate the piano writing's debt to Liszt, particularly in the final climaxes. Granted, 45 minutes of playing time is considered low by CD standards, yet when you consider how well these compositions work together as a program, to say nothing of Ashkenazy's distinguished artistry, you won't feel shortchanged.
