Notes and Editorial Reviews

The 1963 film Cheryomushki (Cherry Town) sprang from the popular and commercial success that greeted Shostakovich’s tuneful homage to the Broadway musical. A gentle satire on the lives and aspirations of young Soviets, the story follows the on-off romances of three young couples, as they battle bureaucracy, petty corruption and bizarre complications to acquire apartments in the sought-after ‘Cherry Town’ – a new showcase estate in suburban Moscow. With all the colour and charm of a Hollywood musical, the film features a wonderful studio soundtrack and irresistible song and dance sequences.

A DVD which will appeal as much to lovers of musicals as to those interested in this remarkable Russian composer.

Read more features include a Shostakovich Chronology and extracts from two complementary Decca DVDs - Shostakovich's Katerina Izmailova (the reworking of his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District), and the Shostakovich Against Stalin documentary.
