Notes and Editorial Reviews

Covering the 2nd quarter of the 20th century, beginning shortly after the perfection of the microphone and electrical recording technology in 1925, the 16 selections compiled here offer a wide variety of operatic arias sung by some of the leading sopranos of the day. Italian, German and American singers are represented, among others, and each has a distinctive and compelling voice.
Beginning with Liu's aria "Signore, ascolta!" from 'Turandot,' recorded by Maria Zamboni shortly after she premiered the role, the collection doesn't skimp on popular warhorses of the soprano repertoire; some of Verdi and Puccini's most famous arias are represented, including a particularly lovely "Un bel di vedremo" sung by Rosetta Pampanini in 1927. But
Read more several less typical works are featured too. Sena Jurinac sings (in German) from Tchaikovsky's 'Queen of Spades,' and Leonie Rysanek and Joan Hammond turn to the 20th-century German repertoire of Richard Strauss' 'Arabella' and Korngold's 'Tote Stadt.' Other post-war stars heard here include Kirsten Flagstad and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, the latter a radiant Countess in Mozart's "Porgi amor." The period sound quality is more than acceptable in almost all cases. All in all, a treasure trove of singing that will inspire nostalgia for the voices of yesteryear. Read less
