Notes and Editorial Reviews

This set never really stood a chance. Does anyone want Mozart coupled with Webern, even if they arguably represent a single line of development from the first to the second Viennese “schools?” Granted, this sort of thing represents a pretty common trend in contemporary programming, but as I never tire of saying, a live concert is one thing, but a CD is forever. As if recognizing this fact, Decca released all of the Webern items on a single disc, possibly the finest in the catalog, but typically never saw fit to issue it in the USA. It was briefly available in Australia, however, that hotbed of enthusiasm for the Cleveland orchestra.

The Mozart symphonies never enjoyed a separate
Read more release, which is a terrible pity because they are surely modern reference recordings, every bit as fine as Szell’s benchmark versions. So that you can savor the comparison, I offer both Dohnányi’s (first sound clip) and Szell’s (second sound clip) handling of the finale of Symphony No. 39. Although the sonics aren’t comparable, with Szell being closer and clearly multi-miked, Dohnányi a bit more distant and natural, the same sterling qualities are evident: breathtakingly clean string articulation at the swiftest tempo, utter transparency of texture, and buoyant rhythms. And all of the performances share the same virtues.

As for the Webern items, the sensitivity and precision of the playing are simply incomparable. Since the music is so short, I can offer as a sample the complete second movement of the Five Pieces, Op. 10. Finding this set isn’t difficult: it’s available “on demand” from Arkivmusic.com, and you may well source it from used vendors as well. As I said, as a commercial proposition in a crowded market, this was pretty much a non-starter, but on purely music terms it deserves a place in your collection.
