Of all Riccardo Muti's Philadelphia recordings for Philips, this was one of the very best. Indeed, there are three recordings of the Third Symphony worth considering: Järvi's (Chandos), Chailly's (Decca), and this one, perhaps the finest of them all. It goes without saying that the orchestral playing is virtuosic in the extreme. Just listen to the violins rip through the third movement, or notice the truly slimy trombones that open the finale. Music such as this, with its complex textures and high level of rhythmic energy, always suited Muti, and he really delivers the goods. Having a nicely peppy account of the Classical Symphony makes a welcome filler, but it's the Third that will really set
Read more your pulse racing. The engineering is also very good (not always true of Philips in Philadelphia), making this "on-demand" reissue from Arkivmusic.com a very desirable prospect.
