ONE STUPENDOUS CD IN MUSIC AND SOUND May 29, 2015 By Patrick V. Casali (Prospect Heights,, IL) See All My Reviews "I've always been a fan of Igor Markevitch, a sort of unsung conducting hero. But, those who know his conducting stle, know he is a genius. He achieves a balance between the choirs of the orchestra that few can match. And, the sound he gets from his players is always first rate. One of the greatest advantages of the Markevitch "sound" is that his instrumentation of the various Spanish pieces use, what to me, sounds like folk-like instruments--particularly in the woodwinds. Yes, there are double reed oboes, but also I think he slips a shepherd's bagpipe or two. (Bagpipes are not only Scottish.) This Espana disc is a great blockbuster and the sound Philips achieves will blow you right out of the room. Amazing when you consider when some of these selections were recorded. (Early to mid 60s) No doubt, the Philips sound engineers had a had in remastering this disc by going back to the original tapes. I thought my vinyl version of this disc was a sound spectacular, but I was more than completely surprised when I heard this CD. The best part, there are selections on this disc that were NOT on the vinyl disc. Kudos to Markevitch and to the Philips sound engineers on a first rate effort all the way around." Report Abuse
